Where you can have a good doggy too!

My Good Doggy

You can begin training the day your pup comes home. Some of the basics you might begin are teaching his name, teaching him/her to  sit, handling his/her ears, feet and mouth.

I can’t think of anytime that it is O.K for your dog to growl at you.  The behavior  you described is called resource guarding and is a potentially dangerous situation. You should address this immediately with a professional trainer.

Yes.  It is important for dogs to be comfortable in a crate.  At some point in his/her life your dog is likely to be crated. Maybe at the vets for a procedure, or maybe for boarding. If your dog can be trained to feel safe in the crate , the stress in these situations will be greatly reduced.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, not really.  Any dog is capable of learning and changing behaviors.  It may take an older dog longer to stop an established behavior, but they can learn a new behavior just as quickly as a younger dog.

I have an older dog who isn't very well trained. Is it too late to train him?

My dog hates going in the crate, should I fix this?

My dog growls when I get near his bones. Isn't this o.k since it’s his bone anyway?

I just brought home a new 8 week old puppy. When should I start training?

A breeder who shows a lot of concern about your environment. One who makes sure the puppies are being socialized. One who has screened the parents for typical genetic defects of the specific breed your looking at. Lastly you want a breeder who will only release the pups after 8 weeks.  These are the basics.  There are many other items that make a breeder a “quality breeder”.

What should I look for in a breeder?
